Common Questions About The Bradley Method®
How is The Bradley Method® different from other childbirth methods?
There are a lot of options out there for childbirth education—but The Bradley Method® stands apart in a big way.
Most childbirth classes are short. Some are a few weeks, while others offer one-time sessions that cover just one topic— hospital procedures, cesarean sections, normal newborns, breastfeeding, etc. Our classes are different. We offer a comprehensive course that teaches everything you need to know—all in one place, from one teacher (or teaching couple). That means no juggling multiple quick classes or trying to piece together the information on your own. You get it all, with one instructor who gets to know you and your preferences—and who will guide you with personal attention, support, and encouragement throughout your third trimester.
The Bradley Method uses techniques that actually work. Our students and doula clients prove it every day: when you’re prepared, supported, and well-trained, natural birth becomes not only possible—but common. We see it all the time!
Our classes can teach you how to avoid unnecessary pain, work with your body, protect your perineum, and how to prepare in advance through good nutrition, regular physical exercise to build overall strength and stamina, and pregnancy exercises that tone the muscles you’ll use during labor and birth.
While we cover every stage of labor in detail, one of the things that make Bradley classes unique is our approach to training your coach.
With the right knowledge and a little training, your partner—or any support person you choose—can become an excellent labor coach. Not just someone to hold your hand, but someone who truly understands the birth process and how to support you through it. We train coaches to:
-
Stay calm and confident
-
Offer hands-on comfort techniques like back rubs and counterpressure
-
Time contractions and recognize labor progress
-
Advocate for your preferences
-
Help you avoid unnecessary interventions
Best of all, because your coach is someone you already know and trust, you’ll respond better to them than to anyone else. That connection is powerful. It strengthens your relationship and gives you someone to hold on to during the most intense parts of labor—someone who’s been trained to help, not just watch.
Bradley classes also help you clarify your birth priorities and create a personalized birth plan that reflects your values and preferences. You’ll learn how to think through your options ahead of time—so you go into labor knowing what matters most to you, and how to communicate those preferences confidently with your provider and team.
And if something doesn’t go exactly as planned, you’ll be ready for that too. Bradley students are taught to stay calm, flexible, and focused—because the health and safety of both you and your baby always come first.
Comprehensive childbirth education also means being ready for the unexpected. Labor can move slowly… or very quickly. Your coach will learn how to recognize early labor, active labor, and transition. They’ll also be trained in what to do if things move faster than expected—even if the baby is born in the car!
We believe in empowering families, and we’re here to give you the knowledge, training, and support to help you have a truly happy birth-day.
Is the course always 12 weeks long?
The full Bradley Method® course is designed to be taught over 12 weeks, and that’s what most instructors offer—because it works. However, in some situations, condensed series are available, especially if you discover the class later in pregnancy. Still, every Bradley class always includes a minimum of 8 weekly classes and at least 20 hours of live, personal instruction (either in person or live online). Weekly reviews continue until your baby arrives, so you stay confident and prepared.
Is it really worth 12 weeks of classes?
Absolutely. The 12-week format is a big reason The Bradley Method® is so effective. It gives you and your coach time to practice techniques, build confidence, and feel truly prepared. This isn’t just information—it’s transformation. You’ll leave class not only knowing what to do, but feeling confident in how to do it.
Isn’t this just another “basic” birth class?
Not at all. The Bradley Method® offers comprehensive childbirth education. It’s not a quick weekend crash course. It’s a deep, hands-on program covering everything from pregnancy wellness to birth planning, labor support, postpartum care, breastfeeding, and newborn care. And the weekly classes during your third trimester offer a steady stream of encouragement, support, and personalized guidance when you need it most.
Does the coach have to be the baby’s father or my partner?
Not at all. We encourage you to select as your coach the person you would most like to have by your side in labor— someone you trust, who wants to support you, and who is willing to learn how to do that well. For many families, that’s a spouse or partner. For others, it might be a close friend, sibling, doula, or another loved one. Whoever your coach is, they’ll be trained to be calm, confident, and capable in the birth room—and a vital part of your birth team.
Should I hire a doula if my coach is trained through the Bradley Method®?
That’s a great question—and the answer is: maybe! If your coach feels confident and wants to support you solo, that can be a beautiful and empowering experience. But many families still choose to add a Bradley-trained doula to their birth team for extra support.
Unlike many other labor support doulas, Bradley doulas are specifically trained in natural childbirth. They’re not only experienced in emotional and physical support—they’ve studied the Bradley Method® in depth and know how to help families achieve unmedicated, low-intervention births. They support not just labor, but the philosophy and techniques you’ve been practicing.
Bradley doulas don’t replace your coach—they enhance the team. They know how to:
-
Offer hands-on support during intense moments
-
Step in when your coach needs a break
-
Keep everyone calm and in sync
-
Navigate hospital settings while staying aligned with your birth plan
And most importantly, Bradley doulas support your decisions. They’re not there to push their own preferences—they’re there to back you up and help you have the birth you’ve prepared for.
Can I take The Bradley Method® as a self-paced or pre-recorded course?
No—and for good reason. The Bradley Method® is never offered as a self-paced or pre-recorded class. Why? Because personal instruction is at the heart of what makes this method so effective.
You deserve more than a video and a login. You deserve real-time, personalized guidance from a certified instructor who sees you, answers your questions, and supports your progress every step of the way. Whether you attend in person or online, you’ll get live, interactive instruction designed to prepare you and your coach for the birth you want.
The Bradley Method® is built on real connection, real practice, and real support—because that’s what leads to real results.
7 Reasons to Take a Bradley Method® Class
1. We teach a method of natural childbirth that consistently delivers.
Every time outcomes from Bradley classes are tracked, the results are remarkable: over 80% of vaginal births among Bradley students happen without any pain medication. That means the vast majority of those who prepare by taking Bradley classes don’t end up needing—or even wanting—medication for pain relief. These outcomes speak for themselves. With the right tools, education, and support, your body is capable of more than you may realize!
2. Every student couple and doula client gets access to the Bradley Method® Student Center.
This exclusive online hub is filled with resources to help you prepare for labor and birth.
The Student Center includes:

3. Coaches Learn Real Skills That Make a Real Difference.
The Bradley Method® isn’t just for the birthing parent—it’s designed to provide excellent training for your coach—the person who will be by your side during labor. Whether that’s your partner, your sibling, a doula, or a close friend, they’ll learn:
-
How to help you stay healthy and low-risk during pregnancy

A full series of relaxation and labor support techniques

Positive ways to advocate for you during labor
-
How to time contractions and track the progress of your labor
-
Helpful labor positions to increase the efficiency of labor, and when to use each one
- Questions to ask if a non-emergency procedure is offered
-
How to handle unexpected situations—even if the baby comes faster than expected!
This isn’t a spectator role. Your coach will be trained, practiced, and ready to offer meaningful, effective support throughout your birth experience.
4. We offer comprehensive childbirth education—all in one class.
No need to sign up for multiple courses. The Bradley Method® covers it all:
-
Pregnancy changes and comfort measures
-
Pregnancy nutrition and exercise
- How the body works during first and second stage labor
- How to work with the body during first and second stage labor
-
Creating a birth plan
-
Postpartum recovery
-
Breastfeeding basics
-
Newborn care
You’ll even learn things most classes skip—like how to reduce the chance of tearing, lower the risk of needing a cesarean, and how to navigate unexpected situations with calm confidence.
5. Small class sizes mean personal attention.
Class size is limited to 8 families, so your instructor can tailor the lessons to your specific needs. You’ll get individual guidance, personalized feedback, and plenty of practice time. More attention = more confidence = better results.
6. Only certified instructors may teach Bradley Method® classes.
All Bradley Method® instructors go through intensive training. Most have personally experienced natural birth or supported numerous unmedicated births. They re-certify every year and are required to stay current. The Bradley Method is a registered trademark. Only professionals certified by the American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth® may teach the Bradley Method®.
7. We offer 12 units of instruction—because deeper preparation leads to better results.
Bradley classes are designed to give you the time and support needed to truly prepare. Our standard 12-week course allows families to absorb, apply, and practice everything they’re learning—week by week—so you’re not just informed, but confident.
In some cases, a condensed series may be offered (never fewer than 8 weekly classes with 20+ hours of live instruction). No matter the format, we want you to finish the course feeling fully prepared—not just for birth day, but for the early days of parenting.
But when time allows, we always recommend the full 12 units—because the more time you have to learn, the more deeply you and your coach can connect with the material, build trust in the process, and practice the skills that lead to real results.
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a supportive, research-backed, proven way to prepare for natural childbirth—The Bradley Method® delivers.
