About the Course:
In this series, we’ll cover key topics such as nutrition during pregnancy, anatomy and physiology, the stages of labor, preparing for the postpartum period, and the essential role of the coach during birth. My goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as you prepare for birth.
A Little About Me:
My passion for natural childbirth arose from my husband’s and my experience birthing our son, whom we euphemistically call our Lunar Prince.
After our first prenatal visit with a traditional OB-GYN, we left feeling disempowered and disconnected from each other. From that day on, my partner became the beacon on our journey toward having a natural birth. As soon as we returned home from that first prenatal visit, my husband immediately began researching alternatives to the traditional OB-GYN–led hospital birth.
Due to heightened media attention on the increased maternal mortality rates of Black women, I was initially hesitant about having a baby outside of a hospital setting. My husband was a diligent researcher, helping us both better understand the complex context of birth in America and the nature of risk. This process ultimately led us to become deeply passionate about natural birth.
We soon found a wonderful birth center with a team of three midwives who deeply understood our desire for a birthing experience that would create a powerful start to our family. They centered protecting the wellness of our child, my husband, and me, rather than focusing solely on the physical health of our child and me. After getting to know us better, one of our midwives encouraged us to consider a Bradley course, as it aligned with our desire for a family-centered, natural birth experience.
We found a local teacher and jumped into reading Bradley books and doing pelvic rocks. Our Bradley experience gave us the space to take a critical and active role in our birthing experience, prompting us to reflect on and plan for the most ideal birth for our family, regardless of the unexpected realities that might arise. Discussing Bradley homework and completing the exercises brought us closer during this pivotal time in our relationship, preparing us for the stressors of becoming new parents. Most importantly, Bradley taught us that we were the right people to advocate for our baby and our family, and it gave us the information we needed to make care decisions that aligned with our values.
As we drove home just hours after Lunar Prince’s birth, I knew that a new calling had been placed upon me: to ensure that more families have access to the support they need to navigate the sacred experience of birth in a physically, emotionally, and spiritually empowered way.
