My name is Niki, and my husband (Randy) and I have been teaching Bradley Method Child-birthing classes almost a decade and a half. This comprehensive, 12-week in-person course in the Bradley Method® of Natural Childbirth provides expectant couples with the tools and confidence for a natural, unmedicated birth experience. Taught by married, credentialed instructors who are also the mother and father of three, this class series offers personalized attention and hands-on guidance, preparing the mother and her coach mentally, physically, and emotionally for the journey of childbirth and new parenthood.
The curriculum emphasizes a healthy pregnancy through proper nutrition and exercise, the active participation of the partner as a supportive coach and advocate, and the use of natural relaxation techniques to manage labor pain.
These classes generally meet weekly for 12 sessions, with each class building upon the last to provide comprehensive preparation. Key topics include:
- Understanding the Process: In-depth information on the anatomy and physiology of all stages of labor and birth, helping parents understand and trust their bodies’ natural abilities.
- The Coach’s Role: Extensive training for partners on how to provide physical comfort, emotional support, and effectively advocate for the mother’s birth preferences with the medical team.
- Relaxation Techniques: The core of the Bradley Method, these classes involve weekly practice of deep relaxation, breathing exercises, and positioning for labor to manage pain and promote a calm birth environment.
- Birth Planning: Guidance on creating a personalized birth plan, understanding available choices, and communicating effectively with healthcare providers.
- Variations and Complications: Information on common variations in labor, how to avoid unnecessary interventions, and how to handle unexpected situations (including emergency childbirth or cesarean sections) if they arise.
- Postpartum and Newborn Care: Preparation for life after the baby arrives, including breastfeeding basics, newborn care, handling a crying baby, and adjusting to the changes of new parenthood.
The Value of a 12-Week Course
The extended 12-week format is designed to build confidence and allow time for habits to form through repetition and practice. Regular labor rehearsals help couples feel prepared for the physical and emotional demands of labor, which Dr. Bradley famously equated to training for an athletic event.
Students receive a comprehensive workbook to guide their practice and provide a valuable resource throughout their pregnancy and beyond. Our small class sizes foster a supportive community where couples can ask questions, share experiences, and build connections with other expectant parents.
